How to Monitor an ISP with LibreNMS
A practical monitoring baseline using LibreNMS — devices, thresholds, alerts and dashboards.
LibreNMS is a strong open-source foundation for ISP monitoring. Deploy it thoughtfully and it becomes the single pane your NOC actually watches. Deploy it as an install-and-hope, and it's a graveyard of noisy alerts.
Baseline device coverage
- Every core router (CPU, memory, temperature, interface utilization)
- Every OLT (per-PON utilization, optical levels, alarms)
- Every switch (interface state, PoE draw)
- Servers (disk, load, service health)
- UPS and environmentals (where accessible)
Thresholds & alert design
Start conservative and tighten later. Alerts should say what to do — a good alert points at a runbook, not a Wikipedia page.
Alert routing
- Email to a shared NOC inbox
- SMS or push to on-call rotation
- Telegram / Slack / other for informational stream
- Silence windows during scheduled changes
